Five Players We Would Love To See In The Premier League This Month

Posted: Thursday, 2nd January 2020

It’s January, which means that the winter transfer market has reopened and clubs across Europe will all start to look at ways to strengthen their squads. Traditionally a much quieter window than the summer – mainly due to it only lasting a month and being midway through the domestic campaign – there isn’t a massive expectation that we will see any huge names joining the Premier League this month.

However, that is not to say that there won’t be some exciting new arrivals throughout January, with plenty of clubs in need of reinforcements. Here are five players we’d love to see join the English top-flight in the upcoming four weeks:

Victor Osimhen – Lille

21-year-old striker Victor Osimhen is creating plenty of noise in the French first division this season. The Lille front man has scored 13 goals in all competitions so far, alongside registering four assists. He is reportedly being targeted by both Liverpool and Chelsea, though it is the latter he would perhaps be suited to more considering the fact that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp rarely diverts from Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah in attack and has the ever-reliable Divock Origi in reserve.

At Chelsea, Osimhen would rival Tammy Abraham up-front and could also operate on either flank, potentially as a replacement for the ageing Willian, who’s contact is set to expire in the summer. Frank Lampard’s trust in youth at Chelsea has been a breath of fresh air this season and Osimhen is certainly the type of player who could flourish in west London. An exciting young prospect, we would be delighted if he made the move to English shores this month.

Kai Havertz – Bayer Leverkusen

One of the most highly-rated players currently plying his trade in Europe right now is Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz. The 20-year-old, who is adept to playing in the No.10 role just behind the striker or deeper in central midfield, is on the radar of a number of Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool. Havertz has notched three goals and an assist in the Bundesliga so far and looks a really mature player in the heart of Leverkusen’s midfield this time out.

United are in desperate need of a creative player to link the midfield and attack, with current playmaker Jesse Lingard massively struggling throughout 2019 as he failed to score a goal or provide an assist in 12 months. The young German is valued at £80m by Transfermarkt so would not come cheaply, but with his age and potential considered, he seems to be a very worthwhile purchase.

Eberechi Eze – QPR

QPR’s attacking midfielder, Eberechi Eze, is taking the Championship by storm this season. The 21-year-old has netted 10 league goals for the Hoops, with his latest contribution coming in the 6-1 rout over Cardiff on New Year’s Day, where he scored once and assisted twice at Loftus Road. Eze’s performances for the R’s have seen several Premier League suitors sit up and take notice of him, notably Tottenham, who are currently favourites to capture his signature this month.

Spurs are 11/4 favourites to sign Eze, but it is not a certainty that he would obtain ample playing time in north London due to the plethora of midfield options in Jose Mourinho’s first-team squad. Everton (15/2) are also thought to be interested in his services, which could prove to be a decent move for him if it did transpire, with the Toffees on the lookout for a creative spark in midfield. Sheffield United (8/1), West Ham (10/1), Southampton (10/1) and Aston Villa (10/1) are all also thought to be keen on acquiring the England U21 international.

Timo Werner – RB Leipzig

After missing out on Erling Halaand, who opted to sign for Borussia Dortmund instead of Manchester United, the Red Devils could now turn their attention to Red Bull Leipzig striker Timo Werner in January. Germany international Werner has scored an astonishing 23 goals in all competitions this season – 18 of those coming in the Bundesliga – while also chipping in with 10 assists (all comps).

Werner is a really exciting player who has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool in the past, but with the amount of attacking options at Anfield it looks unlikely that he would make the switch to Merseyside. United, on the other hand, have a distinct lack of options up-front and could do with a recognised forward to help secure them a place in the top four this term. Werner’s current deal at Leipzig includes a release clause that has been quoted at as low as £25m, though several outlets claim that it could be double that at £50m. Even if it were the latter, however, that is still an extremely low price for a player who is only 23 years of age and has such an exciting future ahead of him.

Jadon Sancho – Borussia Dortmund

You would be hard-pressed to find anyone that doesn’t want to see Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho in the Premier League. It will happen, that’s a guarantee, but when remains to be seen. Chelsea have moved to solid 6/4 favourites to sign the young England international now their transfer ban has been lifted, and you can’t help but feel that a move to Stamford Bridge would be the perfect choice for him.

Under the guidance of Frank Lampard, who is building an exciting, young, homegrown squad at Chelsea, Sancho would slot right in on either flank and add so much quality to an immensely talented side. The 19-year-old could link up with the likes of Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham – just like he does for England – and benefit from playing in a system which places great emphasis on their wide players. Sancho is an absolute star and has been brilliant for Dortmund, but now is the time for him to return to the world’s strongest league in order to further progress his career.
