Flat racing fans are treated to five spectacular days of action on the Sussex Downs, as Glorious Goodwood kicks off on Tuesday afternoon, and on the opening day of the south coast showpiece we will see Europe’s premier stayer line up in the Goodwood Cup, while the Lennox Stakes and Vintage Stakes are two other notable Group events on Tuesday.
We preview the Goodwood Cup and Lennox Stakes here:
3:35pm Glorious Goodwood – Goodwood Cup (Group 1)
Fresh from watching Enable win the King George at the weekend, John Gosden can now turn his attentions to another stable star on Tuesday, as he saddles the world class stayer Stradivarius, who is looking to maintain his dominating in the marathon division, and duly record his third win in the Goodwood Cup.
Wins in 2017 and 2018 catapulted Stradivarius to the top of the tree in the staying ranks, and having already won the Yorkshire Cup and Gold Cup at Royal Ascot this season then it’s no surprise to see the five-year-old heading the betting at 8/11 with Paddy Power bookmakers, as he looks to bag the Goodwood Cup hat-trick.
Cross Counter (7/2 with 888Sport) and Dee Ex Bee (5/1 with William Hill) were both beaten by Stradivarius in the aforementioned Gold Cup, but the former showed when winning the Melbourne Cup that he can produce the goods on the big stage, so Gosden will certainly be wary of the pair that are still open to improvement over this 2m distance.
There’s a significant difference in the betting between the top three and the rest of the field, but Wells Farhh Go was a winner at Newmarket on his comeback run, and could prove to be the each-way value for punters at 16/1 with Paddy Power, while Dashing Willoughby was a fine winner of the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, and adds more depth at 16/1 with Betway bookmakers.
3:00pm Glorious Goodwood – Lennox Stakes (Group 2)
David Elsworth’s Sir Dancealot claimed Group 2 glory at the 2018 Glorious Goodwood festival as he bounded to glory in the Lennox Stakes, and the five-year-old will aim to emulate Nayyir by winning back-to-back renewals of the 7f event, which takes place at 3:00pm on Tuesday.
Available at 13/2 with William Hill, Elsworth’s charge was last seen finishing fourth at York in a Listed event, so he will certainly need to build on that effort to figure here, and he will have to get the better of some notable adversaries on the Sussex Downs in one of the toughest betting conundrums of the day.
Sir Michael Stoute’s Zaaki failed to land a hat-trick of wins when touched off by the ill-fated Beat The Bank in the Summer Mile at Ascot, but a repeat of that effort should see the 11/4 favourite with 888Sport go very close, while James Tate’s Hey Gaman was edged out in a Group 2 in Ireland last time out, and is entitled to play a notable role here, and is 4/1 with BetVictor.
Space Traveller (6/1 with William Hill) was a fine winner of the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, but the three-year-old will face the older horses here, while Suedois (8/1 with BetVictor) and Pretty Baby (14/1 with William Hill) add more depth to what is a fascinating contest.
